Very good
This was the only book that I could find which was dedicated to designing web based applications in Visual J++. It is written in a concise, yet easy to understand way with lots of good examples. It is not a beginners book but there are lots of Visual J++ books around suitable for beginners. An excellent source of information. It even comes with Visual J++ version 1.0 on CD. Just what I needed

A Good Book
The best J++ book I have ever seen. Not for beginer

Living in Seattle we wanted to take advantage of all the fresh fish available, but we had no idea how to cook it. Everything we have tried out of this book has been easy and delicious. Most of the recipes give suggestions for side dishes which makes meal planning even easier. Whenever we get fish for dinner this is the cookbook we pull out!

This is a great reference for cooks at any level of ability. Fundimentals of buying, cutting up, basic techniques, and cooking safety. Easy to follow recipes which are not fussy and don't loose the flavor of the seafood in the sauces, yet can be quite sophisticated. Expanded information, definitions and seafood facts which can enlighten profesional chefs and intertain those who pick-up cookbooks for leasure reading. For example, what constitutes 'white fish',who are the grazers and the predators in the ocean, and how is caviar farmed.

Easy to follow - Outstanding Taste
This book is wonderful for cooks that use seafood comes from the California coast. The recipes do not take require the resume of a rocket-scientist and yet the finished courses look, taste and smell like fine cuisine from a highly rated restaurant.

Great recipes for every day or special entertaining occasions.

It is so rare that I find a book that takes my breath away, but this did it. After reading "Red, White and Blood" part of the bookI was stunned by its power and rushed to order the book. The rest of the book did not disappoint.

Marvin writes hard and scores again! This book is not for the faint at heart!

What?
This is a book of poetry! Some people need to read before they write a review.

The Wizard of Oz : The Film Classic Comes to Life With Sound and Stunning Three-Dimension
Published in Hardcover by Intervisual Books Inc (October, 2000)
Authors: Jay Scarfone and William Stillman
Average review score:

Pop goes the Tin Man!
A sepia tornado hurls Dorothy's house out at you. Turn the page and the glorious color of Oz comes to life as Glinda hovers over Dorothy. Out of the many illustrated pop-up Oz books, this one is done with actual photos from our beloved movie! The book even creeks as Dorothy renders aid to the Tin Man. 11 pop-outs (6 of them are hidden in the side flaps) makes the reader part of the movie while turning the moving pages and lifting the flaps to discover all the familiar things we've grown to love. Just imagine melting the Wicked Witch at your will with only your fingertips. And if that's not enough, pop the CD out of it's pocket and into your player and listen to Judy Garland sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". Besides being a warm memento of the movie, this book is FUN!! Check out another Oz-some book by William Stillman and Jay Scarfone "The Wizardry Of OZ", they make great companion pieces.

OZ-some!
This book was a WIZ of a WoW!

As you open each page, you see these incredible 3-D Pop-Ups! Plus you have hidden pannels to search through, AND a fun 7-minute long CD of song excerpts from the soundtrack of the movie (the Overture, "Over The Rainbow," etc.)

The kids will love it : IF they can get it away from the adults, that is!

This is a must-have book by the world's foremost OZ Experts -- Enjoy!

A visual extravaganza down the yellow brick road!
I was excited when I heard this book was in the works, and am now thoroughly pleased and thrilled to see its results! This book is magnificient; such a fresh, original way to pay tribute to MGM's classic 1939 film. The 3-D elements of this book really allows the reader to interact with it. A terrific job by both the authors and folks at Intervisual Books.

One might think that the book is lacking something with only ten pages, but that is NOT the case. Each turn of the page is jam packed with beautiful imagery from "The Wizard of Oz". This includes exquisitely designed mechanical pop-ups, gatefolds, and mini-windows to open up with plenty of pictures of our favorite Oz characters and scenes. Also, the authors did a fine job in retelling the classic movie with a simple, elegant writing style.

From the moment you open the book you get to experience the imagery of Oz leap off the pages right before your very eyes. Get whisked away from Kansas with a 3-D tornado and watch the Wicked Witch melt. You can almost feel the wind against your face and hear the cackle of the old crone as she meets her demise.

Another fun and fine point about this book is the 'extra' CD which accompanies it. The author's claim it will let you 'click your heels to the beat'. Well, don't be surprised if your feet are marching to the beat. And, if it weren't for having to hold the book in your hands, you'd probably be slapping your knees, too!!

This is another exceptional Oz contribution from Jay Scarfone and William Stillman. They've pretty much covered it all ... historical research, collectibles treasury, and now a trip down the lighter side of the yellow brick road with a visually extravagant three-dimensional edition of MGM's classic movie. This book will be a classic in its own right. I highly recommend everyone buy two copies; one to 'play' with and one to keep!

Wounded Boys Heroic Men: A Man's Guide to Recovering from Child Abuse
Published in Paperback by Adams Media Corporation (June, 1998)
Author: Daniel Jay Sonkin
Average review score:

best self help book ever
This is a great book. I have found most self help books, and most psychologists, lacking empathy for victims of abuse. I have made many unsuccessful attempts in the past to work through my problems but never made any real progress. Dr. Sonkin breaks the process down into four steps- experiences, feelings, attitudes, and behaviors- which have made it possible for me to understand how to work through it all. And the great empathy he expresses was what allowed me to get beyond the usual andger and alienation I feel toward therapists, who tend to be judgemental and condescending. I went through and did all the exercises and wrote everything down- in particular writing down all the feelings lifted a great burden from me.

If you are suffering from the effects of abuse, find a good therapist and get this book. Life will look a lot better.

A must read for men dealing with childhood abuse issue
I have found this book to be a valuable resource for men dealing with childhood abuse issues. As a survivor, I found most of the literature on abuse to be directed toward women. Sonkin directs this towards men and speaks to the issues men go through. Though not an easy read, I have had many of the issues described thoughtfully and caringly in a way that speaks to me. Many of the thoughts and feelings that I've experienced were laid out in the book, but solutions also offered. If you are just beginning your journey to healing or well along the process, this book can be helpful along the way.

review of heroic men
This is a very insightful book into a subject that is greatly ignored. This book can help many men to overcome something that is usually hiden from public view and can help others understand what their men whom have suffered abuse go through.

Zink the Zebra: A Special Tale
Published in Library Binding by Gareth Stevens (September, 1997)

A must read for all children and adults
This book is one of the most beautiful children's books ever published. What a powerful message! Everyone knows someone who has spots instead of stripes-The Zink the Zebra Foundation also provides wonderful programs for schools and Girl Scout councils, check them out ....

Joshua Araujo Review
I like when the brother and Zink played together and the other zebras didn't want to play with Zink because she was different. But her brother stuck with her and didn't let her down. I think this is a very good book. I think it shows what true friendship is.

Every Child Should Read This Book!
This is an excellent book. It was written by a young girl who got cancer and felt she was being treated differently by her friends. The story of Zink the Zebra teaches children to accept other people's differences because we are all special and all want to be loved. The pictures and story are very sweet. I HIGHLY recommend it!

The 24-Hour Turnaround: The Formula for Permanent Weight Loss, Antiaging, and Optimal Health--Starting Today
Published in Hardcover by Regan Books (28 May, 2002)
Authors: Jay Williams and Debra Fulghum Bruce
Average review score:

Feeling Good Made Easy
I have found that this author has taken information and research to the next level. She has helped me understand ALL aspects of fitness plus a LOT about anti-aging and natural hormone balancing. She clearly understood the problems of HRT long before the public was given this information. It's easy to understand with many ways to motivate yourself. She actually teaches you how to become your own personal trainer, so I got rid of mine and saved a bundle. This is not a trendy book, but one that I have highlighted heavily for future reference. This is solid, well researched "information for life" and I already feel and look so much better. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Amazing weight loss and anti-aging guide
24 Hour Turnaround is 8 books in one! It covers every base of weight loss, fitness, aging, hormones, sleep, diet, motivation, meditation, yoga and more. Easy to read (but includes the research if you want to learn more). Provides easy to follow steps to start to change your life immediately. I have never been so motivated and able to stay on a program. Finally exercise makes sense! The author gives you an exercise perscription that makes exercise easy - not painful. The Definition Diet teaches us how to go and find food we like to eat instead of someone elses favorite food. Most importantly I learned how and why these changes will effect my life. I have lost 16 pounds and I feel great. My entire family is on the Turnaround!

About Harry Towns
Published in Paperback by Atlantic Monthly Press (February, 1990)
Author: Bruce Jay Friedman
Average review score:

Portrait of the Artist as Aging Screenwriter
About Harry Towns is one of the funniest books I have ever read. It is also a profound look at an essentially decent, reasonably intelligent, if occasionally silly man adjusting to a world that has become a little more deranged while he has gone about the business of living. Bruce Jay Friedman manages to balance many moods - sadness, compassion, and optimism - in this very funny look at a screenwriter who wonders just how the hell he got to this strange place in his life. Read it and weep with laughter.

Screenwriter As Sensitive Thug
Harry Towns is right out of the mouth of James Brown: "I'm a Greedy Man." He is a man who can feel sympathy for a wealthy coke dealer but want to smash in the head of a someone who tries to discipline his son. Harry Towns is a New Yorker who learns to appreciate LALA Land..he is open to experiences...he is open to coke, whores, various neuroses, random acts of violence, random acts of cowardice, all the while following a strict code of rules set up for the governance of Harry Towns...in a strange way like a noble bandit in a western, Harry Towns is governed by his own set of rules, which upon this reader's reflection are just, wise, humane and if a touch selfish serve to keep the bandit sane in a world of totalitarian, brutal, evil, materialistic and vacuous Good Citizens.

The American Bicycle
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (October, 1995)
Authors: Jay Pridmore, James Hurd, and Jim Hurd
Average review score:

One Colorful Book
This is an amazing book. The history of the American bicycle has never been more beautifully depicted than on the pages of this book.

THE AMERICAN BICYCLE is chock full of super photographs and illustrations of bicycles through the years. From the very first large-wheeled bicycles to the lightweight speedsters of today, this book covers it all. The book is divided into several detailed sections that fully describe a period of time in bicycle manufacturing. The book covers all of the main producers, especially Schwinn.

THE AMERICAN BICYCLE takes an in-depth look at some of the more unique bicycles, and ventures into the realm of collecting and restoration. This book truly was interesting reading. The colorful photographs and diagrams and the carefully crafted writing make for a wonderful "coffee table book," that is sure to be conversational piece in any household.

great photos
Though not a comprehensive study it is more a tour of the unique. It shows the more unusual bicycles, which is exactly what I fancy. What this book does show that I have never seen before is wooden bicycles! I love this. There are other books that will cover Scwhinn, etc. What I would have liked to have seen is the all plastic ten speed and other unusual entries from the 70's and 80's. As a former collector, restorer, and bike lover I am buying th book and making a wooden bike.
